What Do Ya Need?
I was looking outside my apartment window this morning. Watching the comings and goings of workers, shoppers, hangers, etc. I started to wonder about what people are doing in town. Shopping. There is a crisis. I've forgotten what it's about.
Banks are broken, and homes are being boarded. Foreclosure, long unemployment lines, no new jobs posted. Yet the town is full of people with lots of brightly colored, diversely named bags. They've been buying. With what? And what do ya need?
No one of my generations can really remember when there was only one store where you got everything. And that everything was just what you needed. One kind of soap, dishwashing detergent, and one type of bread. You name it. Of course, those days were when my grandmother was my age, I guess.
We have so much. We can buy even more. I looked around my place and wondered if I should go into town? For what? My fridge is full. As are the cupboards. New clothes? Why? My closet space is already suffering.
The days of just having, wanting, or needing the bare necessities are faded photographs in an old auntie's album, which she brings out to show the YouTube generation on Sunday visits.
I'm staying home today. I don't need anything. Except for love....and, ...er let me think.... I could use a new .... something.
